The U.S. crushed Paraguay in the first round of the 2026 World Cup
The day’s action kicked off with the Group D match between the U.S. and Paraguay. For the American team, this is their first match at a home World Cup.
The match at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles County, California, ended with a convincing 4-1 victory for the U .S. national team.
The U.S. team took an early lead. Just seven minutes in, the Paraguayans put the ball into their own net: after a cross from Weston McKennie on the left flank of the penalty area, Paraguayan midfielder Damian Bobadilla mishandled the ball in his own penalty area and scored an own goal.
In the 28th minute, Mauricio Pochettino’s team could have doubled their lead, but the referees disallowed Folarin Balogun’s goal for offside.
However, the U.S. did score their second goal in the 31st minute. Christian Pulisic crossed from the left flank, and Balagun finished the attack with a precise shot into the far corner.
Before halftime, the Americans made it a rout. In the 45th minute, Balogun scored his second goal: after a pass from Malik Tillman, he spectacularly fired the ball into the top corner of Paraguay’s net.
In the second half, the Paraguayans could only respond with a consolation goal. In the 73rd minute, Mauricio took advantage of a pass from Julio Enciso and fired a precise shot into the far corner.
The Americans sealed the final score in stoppage time. In the 90th minute, Alexander Freeman found Giovanni Reyna with a pass near the edge of the penalty area, and Reyna sent the ball into the far corner with a beautiful strike using the outside of his foot.
As a result, the U . S. national team crushed Paraguay 4-1 and got off to a strong start at the home World Cup.
Group D also features Australia and Turkey alongside the U.S. and Paraguay. Their head-to-head match in the first round is scheduled for Sunday, June 14, at 7:00 a.m. Kyiv time.
