A restaurant owner explained why restaurants are closing in Kyiv

Restaurateur Dmytro Chikalo stated that the main reasons for the closure of dining establishments in Kyiv are a shortage of staff and a harsh winter. In other words, the problem at the moment is not solely financial. The winner of the show “Zvana Vechera” made these remarks on the air during “Kyiv Time,” as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Novyny.LIVE.

According to Chikalo, generally speaking, only small establishments remain open at the moment, specifically coffee shops, small restaurants, or fast-food joints.

He cited the extremely harsh winter as one of the reasons for this trend, as restaurants were forced to spend significant amounts of money on maintaining generators, and some establishments could not even afford that.

“Not every restaurateur, not every small business owner, can afford to buy one (a generator—ed.). I won’t even mention the cost of maintaining it and spending money on fuel day in and day out,” said Dmytro Chikalo.

The restaurateur cited another problem: a catastrophic staff shortage, as many people have been mobilized. According to him, while it used to be possible to raise salaries and attract employees, there are simply no workers available now.
