The voyage is coming to an end: the ship carrying the Hantavirus will arrive in Rotterdam

18 May 07:15

The cruise ship MV Hondius, which was affected by the Hantavirus, is scheduled to dock at the port of Rotterdam this morning, May 18. This will be its final destination. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Reuters.

It is known that Dutch authorities have imposed quarantine measures for the 25 crew members and two staff members who remain on board.

Also, according to a statement from local authorities, quarantine centers have been set up for some crew members who are not Dutch citizens. But it is still unclear whether they will remain there for the entire 42-day quarantine period.

Some Dutch citizens have expressed concern about the ship’s arrival in Rotterdam. They fear that people will not be able to follow quarantine rules, but told Reuters that they do not expect a new pandemic.

What happened

As a reminder, on May 2, the MV Hondius stopped off Cape Verde, its intended final destination, after authorities barred passengers from disembarking due to an outbreak of hantavirus.

The WHO and the EU asked Spain to organize an evacuation in the Canary Islands, after which the ship set sail for Rotterdam with a minimal crew and two additional medical staff members.

Initially, there were about 150 passengers and crew members from 23 countries aboard the luxury cruise ship. But on May 2, the World Health Organization first learned of an outbreak of illness among the passengers.

Since the start of the hantavirus outbreak, three people have died: a married couple from the Netherlands and a German citizen.
