Five Demands: Iran Outlines U.S. Conditions for Resuming Talks
17 May 22:15
The Iranian state news agency Fars has published a list of five demands that the U.S. allegedly presented to Tehran ahead of the second round of peace talks, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing DW.
According to Fars, Washington refuses to provide any compensation for damages inflicted on Tehran during the war launched by the US and Israel on February 28. The US also intends to remove 400 kg of enriched uranium from Iran and agrees to allow only one nuclear facility complex to operate in the country. Furthermore, President Donald Trump’s administration refuses to unfreeze “even 25% of Iran’s frozen assets” and links the end of the war directly to the progress of negotiations.

By imposing such conditions, the U.S. is attempting to achieve goals it failed to achieve during the war, according to Iranian authorities. They also point out that the “threat of aggression” from the U.S. and Israel will persist even if the demands are met. In this regard, the Mehr news agency, which is sponsored by the Iranian government, reported a “deadlock in the negotiations.”
Iran refuses to negotiate until its conditions are met
The Fars news agency also reiterated the conditions previously put forward by the Iranian government to U.S. representatives. These include an end to the war, including in Lebanon; the lifting of sanctions against Iran; the unfreezing of all the country’s frozen assets; compensation for war damages; and recognition of Tehran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. It is noted that Iran was the first to put forward conditions, and the five points from the U.S. were a response to them.
A Fars source, as early as May 12 when Iran’s five points were published, emphasized that Tehran would not return to negotiations with the U.S. without these conditions being met. Moreover, Iranian authorities consider their demands to be “minimum measures to build trust.”
NYT: The U.S. may soon launch an operation to seize Iran’s uranium
The US and Israeli war against Iran began on February 28. The ceasefire, reached in April with Pakistan’s mediation, is regularly violated by both sides. Since April 13, the U.S. Navy has been blockading ports in Iran, while Iranian drones are constantly attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz and targets in the Persian Gulf countries.
According to sources cited by The New York Times, the U.S. and Israel are currently engaged in intensive preparations for a possible resumption of the war against Iran as early as next week. It is reported that among the options being considered is the deployment of U.S. special forces to Iran to search for nuclear materials hidden underground.
“About 5,000 Marines and roughly 2,000 soldiers from the Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division are in the region awaiting orders,” the NYT writes.
Another possible scenario, should the U.S. president decide to break the “negotiation deadlock” with Tehran, is “more aggressive bombing” of Iranian military and infrastructure targets, the newspaper’s sources said.
