Russia attacked a Naftogaz facility: gas production has been hit

17 July 12:34

On the morning of July 17, the Russian occupation forces launched a massive drone attack on a gas production facility belonging to the Naftogaz Group in the Kharkiv region. Due to the danger and the damage caused, operations at the facility had to be suspended. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing a statement from the Naftogaz Group.

Russia Attacked a Gas Production Facility in the Kharkiv Region

According to the company, Russian troops have been launching massive drone strikes since early morning on one of the gas production facilities in the Kharkiv region.

Due to the attack, production at the facility has been halted. Thanks to safety measures taken in advance, no staff were injured—all employees are in shelters.

The extent of the damage is currently unknown

It is currently impossible to assess the extent of the damage, as the threat of further strikes persists in the region.

Naftogaz emphasized that the safety of people remains the top priority. Therefore, repair crews and technical specialists will be able to begin assessing the damage only once the situation allows.

It is currently unknown how severely the equipment has been damaged or how long it will take to restore the facility’s operations.

Previously, during similar attacks, the company was also forced to temporarily shut down production facilities until the shelling ceased and emergency repairs were completed.

About 250 attacks since the beginning of the year

The company notes that Russian strikes on the group’s facilities have become systematic. Since the beginning of 2026, Naftogaz facilities have already been subjected to about 250 attacks.

Russia regularly shells gas production, processing, and fuel infrastructure in the Kharkiv, Poltava, Sumy, and other regions.

In particular, in early July, the group’s production assets in three regions were targeted simultaneously. Russian occupation forces used various types of drones, including jet-powered ones.

Naftogaz described these shellings as a targeted attack on Ukrainian gas production and an attempt to disrupt the country’s preparations for the heating season.

Russia is systematically targeting Ukraine’s gas production

Strikes on gas production facilities pose risks not only to the operation of individual sites. They can affect the pace of gas storage, infrastructure preparations for winter, and Ukraine’s need for additional energy imports.

Serhiy Koretskyi, Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine, previously stated that Russian troops are deliberately attacking production facilities in an attempt to weaken Ukraine’s energy system ahead of the new heating season.

The previous attack took place on July 6

Russia launched a previous massive strike on a gas production facility in the Kharkiv region on July 6.

At that time, a fire broke out at the facility after the first strike, and one employee was injured. He received first aid and was taken to the hospital.

Later, the Russian army attacked the same facility again, attempting to increase the scale of the destruction. During the second strike, the workers were already in shelters. Operations at the facility also had to be halted.
