Russia struck a foreign merchant ship: there are dead and wounded sailors

Russian occupation forces struck a civilian merchant ship flying the Togolese flag that was in a Ukrainian port while unloading mineral fertilizers. Three crew members were killed in the attack, and five more sailors were injured. This was reported by Oleg Kipper, head of the Odesa Regional State Administration, and Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to official reports, the strike occurred while the ship was being unloaded.
As a result of the strike:
- a fire broke out in the ship’s superstructure;
- three crew members were killed;
- five more sailors were injured.
“According to preliminary information, three crew members were killed, and five others were injured. They are receiving all necessary medical care. I extend my sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased,” Kipper wrote.
All of the injured have been hospitalized. Medical personnel are providing them with the necessary care.
“This is yet another Russian attack on Ukraine’s civilian shipping and port infrastructure,” emphasized Oleksiy Kuleba.

International shipping is under threat
According to the minister, Russian attacks on civilian vessels pose risks not only to Ukraine but also to global trade.
In particular, such attacks threaten:
- the safety of international shipping;
- the operation of Ukrainian seaports;
- the stability of global logistics chains;
- the food security of many countries around the world.
Ukrainian authorities emphasize that attacks on civilian vessels violate international humanitarian law and pose a threat to international maritime trade.
Russia continues to attack port infrastructure
In recent months, Russia has regularly launched attacks on Ukrainian seaports, grain terminals, logistics facilities, and civilian vessels.
Such attacks have already resulted in:
- damage to port infrastructure;
- a reduction in Ukraine’s export capacity;
- higher costs for maritime logistics;
- difficulties in exporting agricultural products.
