5 May 12:52

On the night of May 5, Russian troops once again attacked Ukraine’s railway infrastructure. The strikes damaged railcars, diesel locomotive infrastructure, and an electric locomotive. Ukrzaliznytsia and Minister of Recovery Oleksiy Kuleba reported on the consequences of the attack, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

Thanks to the work of monitoring services, employees were able to warn of the threat, and some staff were moved to shelters in advance.

Russia attacked railways in three regions

On the night of May 4, Ukrzaliznytsia facilities in several regions came under attack.

Damage was reported in:

  • Kharkiv region;
  • Poltava region;
  • Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.

Russian troops attacked railway infrastructure with drones. Rolling stock, railcars, and facilities near the tracks were hit.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia

Ukrzaliznytsia described the night of May 5 as difficult for the railway, but emphasized that the most important thing was that there were no casualties among passengers or employees.

“A difficult night for the railway. The enemy attacked infrastructure facilities and rolling stock. Thanks to the work of the monitoring group, we managed to avoid casualties among railway workers and passengers. In particular, a female conductor managed to take cover in a mobile shelter—this saved her life. We are continuing operations. Safety comes first,” Ukrzaliznytsia stated.

According to the company, despite damage to the infrastructure, the railway continues to operate, and train service is ongoing.

Strike on Kharkiv region: train car destroyed

According to Recovery Minister Oleksiy Kuleba, on May 5, a Russian drone attacked a railway facility in the Kharkiv region.

The strike destroyed a railcar. However, the conductor was warned of the danger in time and took shelter in a mobile shelter.

“Today, May 5, at around 7:30 a.m., an enemy UAV attacked and destroyed a railcar in the Kharkiv region. But the most important thing is that people are safe. The monitoring center was operational, allowing the conductor to take shelter in a mobile shelter in time. The locomotive crew was also brought to safety. Preliminary reports indicate no casualties,” Kuleba said.

Poltava region: a drone struck between the tracks

In the Poltava region, a Russian drone struck between the tracks near a diesel locomotive.

No one was injured, but the explosion damaged a railcar. A fire broke out after the impact, which was extinguished by emergency services.

This strike demonstrates once again that Russia is targeting not only major hub stations but also rolling stock and sections critical to the stable operation of the railway.

Dnipropetrovsk region: electric locomotive damaged

Another strike by a Russian UAV hit a railway station in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

The attack damaged an electric locomotive that was on the tracks. The train had been stopped in advance due to the threat of drones. Employees were warned in time, so they were in shelter.

There were no casualties as a result of this attack either.

Train service continues

Despite the nighttime strikes, Ukrzaliznytsia continues to operate. Railway workers are repairing damaged infrastructure, checking traffic safety, and organizing further train service.

Oleksiy Kuleba emphasized that even amid constant attacks, the top priority remains the safety of people.

“Even under these conditions, we are protecting people. The railway is operating. Service continues,” Kuleba added.
