The U.S. Senate approved a bill imposing “severe sanctions” against Russia

On Friday, August 7, an overwhelming majority of the U.S. Senate backed a bill imposing sweeping sanctions against Russia, which had been championed by the late Senator Lindsey Graham, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports, citing Reuters.
Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, was among Kyiv’s most outspoken allies in Congress during its four-year war against Russia, and the bill aims to increase economic pressure on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.
It also includes an expansion of sanctions against Iran, which U.S. President Donald Trump had sought. The vote resulted in a 68-9 vote in favor of the “Lindsey Graham Act,” which calls for sanctions against Russian officials and the imposition of strict tariffs on China, India, and other countries to reduce their dependence on Russian oil and gas.

Broad support for tougher sanctions against Russia may not be enough to ensure the bill’s passage in the House of Representatives, as
some lawmakers fear that Trump’s new tariff powers could increase costs for American importers and consumers, while also exposing Republicans to political backlash.
Trump’s Republican colleagues hold a slim majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. If the bill becomes law, it will allow Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that are major consumers of Russian energy resources, including India, Japan, and some European Union countries, and will leave it to his discretion to lift them.
But supporters of the bill insist that the tariffs are narrow enough to serve their purpose—reducing Russian energy “revenues” that fund the war against Ukraine—without causing negative consequences. They stated that the agreement represents the best opportunity for Congress to pass legislation in support of Ukraine, and that strong bipartisan support in the Senate will provide momentum for its passage in the House of Representatives.
