In Ukraine, the average age of women giving birth to their first child has changed significantly over the past decade. Whereas previously a 26-year-old woman was considered a “first-time mother,” now first births are increasingly occurring between the ages of 30 and 32. This was discussed in an interview with the YouTube channel
According to him, the approach to the age of the expectant mother has changed significantly even during his professional career.
“When I started my medical practice more than 40 years ago, we had a term ‘first-time mother’. We applied it to women who were 26 years old.
Today, the average age of women giving birth is higher. I think it has shifted to 30-32 years old,” says the doctor.
Dmytro Govseev noted that this shift in age has both medical and social dimensions. On the one hand, physiologically, a woman’s body is ready to give birth at an earlier age, but on the other hand, modern women are increasingly approaching motherhood more consciously.
“Is this good or bad? From the point of view of pregnancy, which is approached as a serious step in life, it is very good. (…) In general, everything is very individual here,” he added.
At the same time, the doctor emphasizes that there is no universal formula for the “ideal age” to have a child. Rushing is just as undesirable as postponing the decision for too long.
“To say that you must give birth at 16 or 18 so that you have plenty of time for self-realization afterwards — I’m not sure that’s the right approach,” he concluded.
How
We would like to add that, according to Dmitry Govseev, today maternity hospitals are competing with each other for literally every woman in labor.
