The U.S. is preparing for destabilization in Cuba this summer: The White House is developing a new strategy

29 May 14:53

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is developing new strategies to respond to a potential destabilization of the situation in Cuba, which could occur as early as this summer. Washington is stepping up sanctions pressure on Havana with the aim of economically weakening the Cuban government.

This was reported by Axios, as cited by "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to the publication, the Trump administration does not intend to carry out a direct invasion of Cuba. Instead, it is focused on gradually increasing economic and political pressure.

One senior administration official said:

“The best way to describe this is ‘accelerationism,’” referring to a strategy of hastening societal collapse.

He added: “We don’t want to destroy the regime just yet. There is a method for that. It works in stages.”

Focus on Negotiations with Iran

The Trump administration is trying to buy time, as it is currently focused on negotiations with Iran. Another official noted that Trump is “in no hurry” and wants to “exhaust all possible levers of influence” regarding Cuba.

U.S. Southern Command conducted interagency exercises on possible actions in the event of chaos in Cuba. During the exercises, scenarios involving mass protests, power outages, and possible repression by the Cuban authorities were discussed.

A key element of Washington’s strategy has been to weaken the support for Cuba provided by Venezuela and its leader, Nicolás Maduro. After the cessation of free shipments of Venezuelan oil, Cuba faced a new economic crisis.

Alongside sanctions, the U.S. continues to provide humanitarian aid to the Cuban people. This month, Washington announced $100 million in aid to Cuba through the Catholic Church and charitable organizations.
