The U.S. has decided to once again block Iran in the Strait of Hormuz and collect compensation for cargo from other countries

Less than a month after the U.S. and Iran signed a ceasefire agreement, new attacks prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to once again announce a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz for Iranian vessels. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Reuters.

In retaliation for Tehran’s claims that it should control the strait and collect tolls, Trump, in his usual manner, issued a threat regarding the economic aspect. He demanded a 20% fee on all other cargo transported through this waterway.

“From this moment on, the U.S. will be known as the ‘Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz,’ but in connection with this and in the interest of JUSTICE, it will receive compensation amounting to 20% of the value of all cargo transported, to cover any and all expenses necessary to ensure the security and protection of this extremely unstable region of the world,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. “The process and preparations will begin immediately.”

The Strait of Hormuz is “open” and will remain so, “with or without Iran,” the U.S. president added.

The price of Brent crude oil subsequently jumped by more than $1 to $79.89 per barrel, but later corrected slightly.

The U.S. and Iran have been trading blows since last week, as Tehran has resumed firing on commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, insisting on its right to control shipping in the strait.
