State of Ukraine’s energy system: what happens after new attacks

8 December 2025 10:56

Ukraine’s power grid continues to operate under high stress due to seasonal consumption growth and massive Russian attacks on critical infrastructure. Despite stable consumption figures, the need for economical use of electricity remains critical, and many regions have restriction schedules and hourly blackouts. This was reported by the Ministry of Energy and Ukrenergo, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs

In this article, we explain what is happening in the power grid on December 8, why it is important to reduce the load in the evening, and how infrastructure damage affects consumption.

State of the power system: the situation is tense but under control

According to the latest information, electricity consumption is in line with seasonal indicators, but the power system is operating at its maximum capacity due to the consequences of Russian attacks and the need to balance limited generation resources.

Power engineers emphasize that

  • energy saving is still necessary, especially during peak hours;
  • energy-intensive appliances should be turned on after 23:00, when the load on the system is lowest;
  • frugality helps reduce the duration of forced outages.

Consequences of the shelling: Donetsk region suffered the most

At night, Russian troops again attacked the energy infrastructure, including facilities in Donetsk region. As a result:

  • a significant number of consumers were left without electricity;
  • emergency repair crews are working in all areas where security permits;
  • power engineers are doing everything possible to quickly bring the damaged equipment back into operation.

These strikes are the eighth massive missile and drone attacks against the power system since the beginning of the year. As a result, all regions of Ukraine are forced to apply restrictive measures:

  • power limitation schedules for business and industry;
  • hourly blackouts for households – from 2.5 to 4 queues.

You can find out the time of outages on the official resources of your regional power company.

Electricity consumption: below normal due to restrictions

Morning figures for December 8

As of 9:30 am, electricity consumption was 15.2% lower than at the same time on the previous business day (Friday).

The reason for this is the application of much wider restrictions.

Figures for December 7

The daily maximum consumption was recorded in the evening – it was 16.5% higher than the evening maximum of the previous Sunday.

This indicates the traditional seasonal increase in demand in the evening, which the power system cannot currently fully cover without outages.

Why it is important to save electricity now

Sustainable consumption has a direct impact on

  • the duration and frequency of outages – the lower the load, the fewer restrictions are needed;
  • the operation of the power system – reducing peak demand avoids accidents;
  • stability of power supply during restoration works.

Power engineers ask people to postpone the use of powerful appliances (washing machines, boilers, heaters, dishwashers) to nighttime hours after 23:00.

The situation can change at any time

Due to the constant attacks and high load on the power grid, the consumption mode and outage schedules may be adjusted throughout the day.
