Trump confused Iran with Ukraine and declared a “military defeat”
29 April 23:49
U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking about the war with Iran and Russia’s war against Ukraine, mistakenly stated that “Ukraine has already suffered a military defeat.” He made this remark during a conversation with journalists at the White House, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
The US president was asked which war he thought would end first: in Ukraine or in Iran. Trump replied that they might follow “a similar timeline,” and then mistakenly mentioned Ukraine in the context of the navy.
“I don’t know. They’re probably following a similar timeline. I think Ukraine has suffered a military defeat. You wouldn’t know that by reading fake news,” Trump replied.
What exactly did Trump say?
During a conversation with the press, Donald Trump stated that Ukraine had allegedly “suffered a defeat militarily.” He then brought up the fleet and the 159 ships.
“Ukraine… militarily, they were defeated, okay? Militarily. You wouldn’t know that by reading the fake news, but look at their navy: they had 159 ships, and now every ship is underwater,” Trump said.
However, this claim does not apply to Ukraine.
Trump has previously spoken repeatedly about the Iranian navy and claimed that Iran’s ships are supposedly “lying at the bottom of the sea.”
In April, the U.S. president spoke of 158 Iranian ships that, according to him, had been destroyed.

Where Trump went wrong
The mistake lies in the fact that the U.S. president, when speaking about Ukraine, cited an argument he had previously used regarding Iran. The claim about “159 ships underwater” has no bearing on the Ukrainian navy.
Ukraine did not have such a fleet in the current war, and the phrase about hundreds of ships refers to Trump’s statements regarding the Iranian navy amid the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and tensions in the Middle East.
Earlier, Trump stated that the U.S. would not allow ships that had paid duties to Iran to pass, and that the U.S. Navy would monitor the situation around the Strait of Hormuz.
What is known about the context surrounding Iran
In recent weeks, the US has stepped up pressure on Iran over the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump announced a blockade of Iranian ports and warned that US forces would respond to any attempts to violate the restrictions. He also claimed that the Iranian navy had suffered significant losses.
That is why the mention of “159 ships underwater” is logically linked to Iran, not Ukraine. The Times also notes that the figure cited by Trump refers to the Pentagon’s claims regarding losses of the Iranian navy, not Ukraine’s.
