The Interfax-Ukraine news agency describes the event as a “protest rally in support of dialogue and reforms in the defense sector.” The participants gathered near the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian People in central Kyiv, marched along Khreshchatyk, the Alley of Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, and Olgynska Street, and concluded with a rally on Ivan Franko Square.

The protest procession stretched for hundreds of meters along the capital’s central streets.

Demands of the Protesters

According to journalists’ observations, people of all ages took part in the rally, though young people made up the majority. Those present demanded that Mykhailo Fedorov be reinstated as Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, and they also criticized recent decisions by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to appoint former Defense Minister Rustem Umerov as head of the Foreign Intelligence Service, and former Mykolaiv Regional State Administration Head Vitaliy Kim as Minister for Veterans’ Affairs of Ukraine.

For its part, the publication nv reports that similar protests also took place in Lviv, Dnipro, Lutsk, Rivne, Poltava, Odesa, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, and Chernivtsi.

In Kyiv, protesters handed a petition addressed to the head of state to a representative of the President’s Office. According to Ukrainian media reports, the petition contains demands to continue the reforms initiated at the Ministry of Defense under Mykhailo Fedorov, as well as a call for the authorities to engage in dialogue with the public.

As reported by the publication “Ukrainska Pravda,” one of the protest’s organizers—veteran Dmytro Koziatynskyi—stressed during his speech at the event that Ukraine has yet to appoint ministers of defense and foreign affairs.
