What was the nature of Russia’s massive attack?

On May 13–14, Russia carried out a large-scale combined strike against Ukraine. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, over the course of two days, Russia deployed 1,567 drones and 56 missiles.

The Air Force reported that on the night of May 14, the Russians launched over 670 attack drones and 56 missiles at Ukraine, while Ukrainian air defense shot down 41 missiles and 652 drones.

According to Reuters, this was Russia’s largest air attack over a two-day period since the start of the full-scale invasion. Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, as well as critical infrastructure sites, were targeted.

What types of missiles did Russia use?

According to Ukrainian sources, during the nighttime attack, Russia used various types of air attack weapons, including strike drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and aeroballistic missiles.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Russians struck a building in Kyiv with an X-101 missile, which, according to him, was recently manufactured. This statement once again brought to the forefront the issue of tightening sanctions against the Russian military-industrial complex and the supply of missile components.

Why this attack was one of the largest

The Air Force emphasized that during the strike, Russia deployed virtually its entire arsenal of air-attack capabilities. It is the combination of a large number of drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles that makes such attacks particularly dangerous for the civilian population.

Combined strikes are difficult for air defense to counter, as different types of targets have different speeds, trajectories, and approach times. Despite this, Ukrainian air defense destroyed most of the aerial targets.
