Strike on the Odesa Region: Russia Attacked the Danube Ports Again, Fires Broke Out

On the night of Wednesday, August 13, Russian troops launched another attack on the southern part of the Odesa region. The Izmail district, home to strategically important Danube ports, came under attack by strike drones. The Izmail District State Administration reported on the consequences of the attack, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to district authorities, Russian drones attacked port infrastructure in the Izmail district. The strike caused damage to facilities, and a fire broke out at the site.
Units of Ukraine’s State Emergency Service are working to extinguish the fire and address other consequences of the Russian attack.
The Izmail District State Administration has not yet specified the extent of the damage or the size of the fire. Authorities have also not yet reported any fatalities or injuries.
Drones were heading toward Izmail
During the nighttime air raid alert, the Ukrainian Air Force warned of groups of Russian strike drones moving over the southern part of the Odesa region. Some of the drones were heading toward Izmail.
According to local authorities, the main target of the attack was the port infrastructure. However, for security reasons, they have not named the specific facilities or terminals that sustained damage.
Why is Russia attacking ports on the Danube?
The Danube ports play a vital role in Ukraine’s foreign trade and cargo transportation. Following the outbreak of full-scale war and restrictions on shipping in the Black Sea, Izmail, Reni, and other ports in the region have become a vital part of alternative logistics.
Russian troops are systematically attacking port terminals, warehouses, grain elevators, transportation facilities, and other infrastructure in southern Ukraine. Such strikes are aimed not only at physically destroying facilities but also at hindering exports, increasing transportation costs, and creating risks for civilian shipping.
The Air Force previously noted that Russia is attempting to target port infrastructure and logistics to undermine Ukraine’s economic capabilities.
This is not the first time that ports in the Odesa region have been targeted by Russia
The Izmail district is regularly subjected to attacks by Russian drones. In particular, on the night of May 19, 2026, port infrastructure facilities in Izmail were also damaged. At that time, an empty warehouse building caught fire after being hit, but there were no fatalities or injuries.
The latest strike on August 13 confirms that the Danube port cluster remains one of Russia’s priority targets in southern Ukraine.
The full extent of the damage from the nighttime attack will be known once emergency response and rescue operations are completed and the damaged facilities have been inspected.
