Ukrainian farmers could lose up to 20% of their grain due to a shortage of storage facilities — Marchuk

Ukraine risks facing a shortage of grain storage capacity by the end of the year. Denis Marchuk, deputy chairman of the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council, made this statement in an interview with  "Komersant Ukrainian".

Among other things, this concerns corn. This year’s harvest is projected to reach 33 million metric tons.

“If the projected harvest is reaped, the shortage of domestic storage capacity could range from 8 to 11 million metric tons. And this will need to be compensated for somehow,” Marchuk explained.

The problem lies not only in the physical shortage of storage facilities. The harvested corn must be dried, which requires significant amounts of electricity. According to Marchuk, due to low commodity prices and export problems, some farmers are already considering the option of not harvesting their crops immediately.

“After all, the costs of harvesting and storing corn may exceed the revenue from its sale,” he noted.

To partially address the problem, Ukraine plans to use plastic silos for grain storage. One such bag can hold about 200–250 metric tons of grain. Marchuk reported that funding has already been secured to store approximately 2.5 million metric tons of grain, and the issue of securing additional storage capacity, he said, should be resolved by November.
