Ukrposhta wants to launch loans for pensioners: how it works

16 February 14:09

Pensioners will be able to obtain small loans for consumer needs from a bank that Ukrposhta plans to establish. These loans will be repaid from the next pension payment.

This was announced by Ukrposhta CEO Ihor Smelyansky in an interview with RBC-Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

“When the bank (Ukrposhta Bank – ed.) starts operating, there will simply be an official overdraft (short-term loan – ed.),” he said, adding that postmen already lend to pensioners by buying food for them on credit “on account.”

The size of loans for pensioners

As a rule, these are small amounts that are repaid from the next pension payment.

“Grandma’s pension ran out, but she needs to eat. The postwoman came and asked what the grandmother wanted. She has a notebook and she writes down ‘Petrivna. Two packs of pasta – 76 hryvnia’. She bought the pasta, gave it to Petrivna, the pension arrived and the grandmother closed the previous ‘overdraft’,” commented Smiliansky.

Tacit permission for postmen to lend money to pensioners

The company does not prohibit such activities by postmen, but in the event of a financial audit, the branch allows for a discrepancy in the amount of one postman’s salary.

“What good will it do if I forbid it? Well, that’s nonsense, won’t the postman give the grandmother “Olvia” or pasta?” added the CEO of Ukrposhta.

Let us remind you that in January, the Pension Fund allocated UAH 65.6 billion out of a total of UAH 82.6 billion for pension payments. Pensions are paid between the 4th and 25th of each month. The money is transferred to bank cards or through Ukrposhta branches according to the recipient’s individual schedule.
