Prices for greenhouse tomatoes are falling in Ukraine: what’s behind the trend

A new wave of price declines for greenhouse tomatoes has emerged in Ukraine this week, according to analysts from the EastFruit project, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
Weather conditions have stabilized in many regions of the country, allowing for an acceleration of the harvest of open-field vegetables. Currently, the harvest is underway in virtually all regions of Ukraine, while pressure on the market continues to intensify. According to farmers’ estimates, demand in the fresh produce market remains insufficiently high.
As of today, prices for high-quality tomatoes have fallen to 30–60 UAH/kg ($0.67–1.34/kg), which is on average 27% cheaper than at the end of the previous workweek. Both producers and wholesale companies attribute the sales difficulties to the low quality of the produce. The plants were severely affected by drought and high temperatures, and the fruits often have sunburn and cracks, which negatively affects their market appearance.
It is worth noting that these products are currently being offered on the Ukrainian market at an average price 25% lower than during the same period last year.
