Ukraine plans to create a testing ground for new demining technologies using AI

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine is considering the possibility of creating a modern test site for testing new technologies used in demining, including those involving artificial intelligence.

This was discussed during a working meeting of experts from the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Economy, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the United Nations Development Program, and others, the press service of the Ministry of Defense reports, "Komersant Ukrainian".

In particular, the project aims to improve the effectiveness of humanitarian demining, test innovations, and exchange experience between Ukrainian and international partners.

“The training ground, which is at the disposal of the Ministry of Defense, can become a unique platform for joint research, testing and training,” said Colonel Olha Drobot, a representative of the Secretariat of the National Mine Action Authority, Head of the Mine Action Information Management Department of the Main Directorate of Mine Action, Civil Protection and Environmental Safety.

According to her, the latest technologies and their development can significantly accelerate the process of non-technical survey of territories, and thus humanitarian demining, improve the safety of deminers and reduce risks to the civilian population.

In addition, the parties discussed new approaches to analyzing satellite and aerial imagery for mapping mined areas, as well as the use of neural networks for automatic minefield recognition and the integration of modern artificial intelligence algorithms into planning and safe demining.

Representatives of the defense ministry also invited those present at the meeting to join this initiative of the Main Directorate of Mine Action, Civil Protection and Environmental Safety.
