Demand for electric cars has increased in Ukraine: top 5 models

Last month, 4,680 units of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) joined the Ukrainian fleet. As compared to March last year, the demand for electric vehicles increased by 6%, and as compared to February 2025 by 4%. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Ukravtoprom.
Electric car market dynamics
The main number of electric cars registered during the month were passenger cars – 4,532 units (new – 647 units, used – 3,885 units).
Among 148 commercial electric vehicles, only 7 cars were new.
Top 5 most popular new electric cars:
- BYD Song Plus – 100 units;
- VW ID.Unyx – 96 units;
- Zeekr 001 – 69 units;
- Zeekr 7X – 59 units;
- Audi Q4 e-tron – 45 units.
Top 5 used electric cars registered in Ukraine for the first time:
- Tesla Model Y – 448 units;
- Nissan Leaf – 445 units;
- Tesla Model 3 – 410 units;
- Nuundai Kona – 273 units;
- KIA Niro – 270 units.
In total, since the beginning of the year more than 12.8 thousand electric cars have passed their first registration in Ukraine, which is 8% more than in the first quarter of 2024.
Of these, 1978 were new (-26%) and 10827 were used (18%).
The statistics shows the growing popularity of electric cars in Ukraine. Over the year the demand for electric cars increased by 68%.
The popularity of electric cars in Ukraine continues to grow due to a number of factors:
- An increase in the number of charging stations, which makes operation more convenient.
- Tax benefits and simplified customs clearance of electric cars.
- Decrease in the cost of electric cars on the secondary market.
- Rising fuel prices, which stimulates the transition to electric vehicles.
Which electric cars were most often imported by Ukrainians in 2024
In total, more than 51.7 thousand zero-emission vehicles (BEVs) were added to the Ukrainian car fleet in the whole of 2024, which is 38% more relative to 2023. The share of new vehicles in BEV registrations, as in 2023, amounted to 20%.
In 2024, new battery electric vehicles were most often imported from China.
Meanwhile, the West is struggling with the Chinese electric car industry: the EU is ready to take tough measures against Chinese electric cars, and the U.S. will quadruple tariffs on them.
Electric cars in Ukraine will become more expensive
Privileges for customs clearance of electric cars in Ukraine will be valid only until the end of next year, but their extension is not envisaged. This was reported by Kommersant Ukrainian with reference to the statement of the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, Tax and Customs Policy Daniil Getmantsev.
The MP explained this position by the uneven tax burden on cars with internal combustion engines and electric cars. In a country that is at war, according to Daniil Hetmantsev, it is impossible to exempt certain goods from VAT.
