The United Kingdom will begin supplying Ukraine with fuel for nuclear power plants

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced at the G7 summit an agreement to supply nuclear fuel to Ukrainian nuclear power plants for the next two years and pledged to step up pressure on Russia. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

To support the supply of enriched uranium by the British company Urenco to the Ukrainian nuclear energy operator Energoatom, £270 million will be provided through the UK Export Finance export credit facility.

“Russia’s aggression threatens not only Ukraine but also the security of all of Europe. That is why the UK is stepping up its efforts—cutting off the sources of revenue that fuel Putin’s war and providing Ukraine with everything it needs for the coming winters,” Starmer said.

According to the British government, the agreement will supply Ukrainian nuclear power plants with nuclear fuel over the next two years. The agreement is crucial for the country’s energy security, as Energoatom accounts for more than half of all electricity generated in Ukraine.

The agreement was finalized during Starmer’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in London last week. The British government also noted that the project will support employment and exports: more than a third of the uranium for Ukraine will be supplied by the Urenco processing plant in northwest England.

During the G7 summit, Starmer is calling on allies to further strengthen their support for Kyiv.

“The G7 countries must collectively do more to ensure Ukraine achieves the just and lasting peace it deserves,” the British prime minister said in a statement.
