Yatsenko: The merger of universities is not based on educational principles, but is intended to seize assets

The reorganization of higher education institutions in Ukraine raises serious questions about the criteria used to merge or split universities. According to MP Anton Yatsenko, the logic behind these decisions has nothing to do with educational expediency.

He stated this in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".

“Higher education institutions are being merged or, conversely, split up not based on the principle that they have, for example, common programs or common fields of study, but simply because someone wants to become a rector, buys the position, or needs to seize land,” the MP noted.

According to him, similar situations are occurring in various regions of the country. In particular, in Odesa, universities that have nothing in common were merged—due to the appeal of the coastal area.

In Mykolaiv, a pedagogical university and a shipbuilding university were merged. In Kamianets-Podilskyi, a university with over a century of history was reorganized due to the presence of significant land plots, says Yatsenko

“Wherever we’re talking about mergers or consolidating universities, it’s almost always about land. Land and buildings. Illegal cash-for-rent deals. Hiring people just to fill quotas. Dead souls,” Yatsenko emphasized.

The deputy reported that as part of the inter-factional group’s work, he had sent parliamentary inquiries and had already received responses. The next step, he said, will be to appeal to law enforcement agencies, specifically the National Anti-Corruption Bureau.
