The situation with the energy facilities bombed by Russia suggests that power cuts are to be expected in major cities, including Kyiv. This was stated in an exclusive commentary to Komersant ukrainskyi https://www.komersant.info/ Oleg Popenko, founder of the NGO Union of Consumers of Public Utilities, said in an exclusive interview with Kommersant Ukrainskyi.

“[Blackouts in Kyiv – ed.] are to be expected. We have lost a huge amount of generation and we have to compensate for it with something. Unfortunately, we have lost about 85% of all the shunting generation that covered our peak loads. We are currently at the lowest level of electricity consumption, but there will come a period when consumption will grow, and we will need to cover it with something,” he said,

– the expert said and added that Ukrainians have already been urged to be as economical as possible with their electricity consumption, especially during peak times. However, according to him, blackouts have already begun in Kyiv.

“Yesterday, blackouts started in shopping centres, I personally recorded it, at 16:00-16:30. Then there were blackouts in Obolon: the whole neighbourhood, including apartment blocks, was also without power. In Darnytskyi district, some shopping centres had limited electricity supply. Escalators were partially down in shopping centres, and there was no electricity in the halls of grocery supermarkets. As for me, the restrictions have already begun, and the situation with the energy sector looks very threatening,”

– said Oleg Popenko.

As a result of massive Russian strikes on Ukraine’s power system(Centrenergo lost 100% of its generation), 399 settlements in Dnipropetrovs’k, Donetsk, Sumy, Kharkiv and Kherson regions were without electricity as of the morning of 12 April.

According to Ukrenergo, emergency power outages are currently being applied only in Kharkiv region, where about 210,000 consumers are without power. In Kryvyi Rih, consumption limits for industrial consumers are still in place.

Ukrainians were urged to saveelectricity.
