In the Kherson region, vegetable production has fallen to less than 1% of the national total, and melon and watermelon production to 3%, whereas before the full-scale invasion, the region accounted for 12.4% of vegetables and one-third of melons and watermelons. This was reported by Arsen Makarchuk, head of the State Statistics Service, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing “Vgoru.”

According to the head of the agency, the agricultural sector accounted for about 10% of gross domestic product and more than 40% of export revenues as of February 2022. As a result of the hostilities, the sector suffered direct losses of $12.1 billion, while total losses amount to $78 billion.

“Clearly, the agricultural sector in the east and south has felt the war’s most painful blow,” Arsen Makarchuk emphasized.

Four southeastern regions—Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk, and Kherson—saw their share of the country’s agricultural production drop from 13.6% in 2021 to 1.9% in 2025. As of the end of March 2026, in the de-occupied territory of the Kherson region, only about 100 farms out of the approximately 500 that were operating before the full-scale war are engaged in vegetable farming.
