Knitting apps earn up to $400,000 a month: developers call the niche undervalued

While most developers are chasing after the next AI app, crochet has unexpectedly turned out to be a lucrative niche, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

A post by indie developer Simone Kanch went viral on social media platform X, drawing attention to the success of crochet apps. According to him, some apps for crochet enthusiasts are earning hundreds of thousands of dollars a month, even though the market itself still lacks high-quality interactive products.

In the screenshot, the author shows two apps:

YarnPal —about 200,000 downloads and $400,000 in monthly revenue;
Loopsy40,000 downloads and $80,000 in revenue.

At the same time, Kanch notes that no one has yet createda “Duolingo for knitting”—a service featuring step-by-step instruction, gamification, levels, achievements, and daily tasks.

Context

In recent years, more and more indie developers have been focusing not on oversaturated categories, but on niche communities with a high willingness to pay for subscriptions. Knitting, sewing, gardening, and cooking have millions of enthusiasts worldwide, but they often rely on outdated or very basic apps.

That’s why we’re hearing more and more that the next successful mobile products may not be built around yet another chatbot, but around hobbies that people have been enjoying for decades.

The irony is that while AI is taking the world by storm, someone could build a multimillion-dollar business… simply by teaching people how to hold a fishing hook properly.
