Assets of the aggressor country in Ukraine: what is known about the case involving the Rosatom building in Podil

22 January 15:17

Law enforcement authorities have referred to court a case involving an organized group accused of fraudulently seizing a non-residential building in central Kyiv. According to the investigation, the ultimate beneficial owner of the property is a Russian company—a nuclear fuel manufacturer—that is a subsidiary of the state corporation Rosatom.

This was reported by the National Police of Ukraine, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to investigators, the building, located in Podil, was formally owned by a Russian joint-stock company. However, information regarding ownership was not entered into the State Register of Real Rights to Real Estate—it was recorded only in the documents of the Kyiv City Bureau of Technical Inventory.

Investigators believe that members of the organized group exploited this loophole to illegally seize the property.

How the scheme worked

The police claim that the defendants deliberately concealed the building’s true owner and used forged documents. As a result, the non-residential premises, with an estimated value of nearly 56 million hryvnias, were removed from the legal owner’s control.

At the same time, the court seized both the building itself and the suspects’ property, with a total value of approximately 3.5 million hryvnias.

Who is involved in the case

Law enforcement officials have not disclosed the names of the defendants. It is known that three members of an organized group are involved. Their actions are classified, in particular, under articles regarding fraud on an especially large scale and forgery of documents.

The pre-trial investigation has been completed. The indictment has been sent to the court for consideration of the case on its merits. If found guilty, the defendants face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

In accordance with the Constitution of Ukraine, the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
