Why tourism in the temporarily occupied Crimea is on the brink of collapse
8 June 16:56
Crimea, which is currently under temporary occupation, was once one of the most popular tourist destinations, but now faces serious challenges that have led to a significant decline in tourist traffic. Fuel shortages, transportation problems, and economic difficulties have significantly impacted the peninsula’s tourism industry.
This is reported by Krym .Realii, as relayed by "Komersant Ukrainian".
Decline in Bookings and Demand
According to data from the Travelline hotel reservation management system, from May 24 to June 6, 2026, the number of bookings in the temporarily occupied Crimea fell by 31% compared to last year, and in Sevastopol—by 40%.
This indicates a significant decline in interest in vacationing on the peninsula.
According to Sergey Romashkin, vice president of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, demand for Crimea began to decline as early as the beginning of June.
Fuel shortages and transportation restrictions
The main way to get to Crimea is by car, as there are no regular flights.
However, the gasoline shortage is complicating travel: refueling limits are set at just 20 liters per vehicle.

In Sevastopol, QR codes were introduced to monitor gas stations, but this did not solve the problem. Lines at gas stations in the Krasnodar Krai, where Crimeans try to fill up their cars, have become a common sight.
Amid fuel shortages, restrictions on the sale of certain products in stores have also been introduced in the temporarily occupied Crimea. This indicates a general deterioration of the economic situation in the region. In addition, Russian authorities have temporarily suspended passenger train service due to incidents involving drones.
At the same time, the temporarily occupied Crimea has lost ground among Russia’s most popular tourist destinations, accounting for only 1.5% of tourism revenue. Many tourists are choosing other destinations, such as Anapa.
As a reminder, on the night of June 8, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a massive drone attack on Novorossiysk. An oil transshipment complex was hit, and a fire broke out on the site.
