Fuel prices in Ukraine currently do not reflect the actual trends in the global oil market—Ukrainians are paying more for fuel than they should, given the current price of oil. This was stated by Yuriy Korolchuk, co-founder of the Institute for Energy Strategies, in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to the expert’s calculations, the gap between the market price of oil and prices at gas stations is several hryvnias per liter for both diesel and gasoline.
“Diesel fuel currently costs an average of 92 hryvnias here. At this oil price, it should already be costing around 80 hryvnias. The same goes for gasoline—the price should be about 5 hryvnias lower,” Korolchuk said.
The expert attributed this discrepancy not to speculation, but to the failed commercial strategy of the traders themselves, who had contracted for large volumes of fuel even before the start of this new wave of the crisis—and are now trying to recoup their costs at the expense of consumers.
“Our gas stations and traders brought in a lot of fuel and contracted it at high prices. And they hadn’t even sold it all by the time this new crisis began. So what we’re seeing now is essentially an attempt to sell this expensive fuel to people,” Korolchuk noted.
