The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) discovered damage to meteorological monitoring equipment during a visit on May 5 to the External Radiation Monitoring Laboratory at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).

The agency reported this on social media platform X, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The visit and the damage found

IAEA representatives visited the laboratory a day after the plant reported a drone attack.

“Inspectors documented damage to some of the laboratory’s meteorological equipment, which is currently not operational,” the agency’s statement said.

Meteorological equipment plays a critical role in monitoring background radiation and ensuring safety.

As a reminder, the drone attack on the external radiation monitoring laboratory took place on May 3. The facility that was attacked is located outside the perimeter of the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP.

In addition, the agency recently dispatched another mission to assess the condition of the electrical substations that ensure the stable operation of the nuclear power plant.

This includes the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which has been left without external power supply on multiple occasions since the start of the war, notably on April 14 of this year.

The Situation Around the ZNPP

The Zaporizhzhia NPP has been under occupation by Russian forces since March 2022. During this time, Russia has repeatedly attempted to grant its control over the facility a pseudo-legal status, disregarding the norms of international law.

As part of diplomatic efforts, the United States has proposed a model for joint management of the Zaporizhzhia NPP involving Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that such an approach is unfair and unacceptable.

Moscow insists that Ukraine and Russia should share the electricity generated by the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
