Nuclear safety at risk: a drone attacked a special laboratory at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

4 May 17:47

A drone attacked the external radiation monitoring laboratory of the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), located outside its perimeter. This incident, which occurred on May 3, has raised concerns within the international community regarding the safety of nuclear facilities in the conflict zone.

This was reported by the IAEA , according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

IAEA Response

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed the attack and expressed concern about the possible consequences. The agency’s official statement reads:

“The IAEA has received a report from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant that a drone attacked its external radiation monitoring laboratory. No reports of casualties have been received, and it is not yet known whether the strike damaged the laboratory, which is located outside the perimeter of the nuclear power plant.”

The IAEA team has requested access to the laboratory to assess the situation on site. The agency emphasized that any attacks near nuclear facilities could pose significant risks to nuclear safety.

As a reminder, the agency recently sent another mission to assess the condition of the electrical substations that ensure the stable operation of the nuclear power plant.

This includes the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which has been left without external power supply on multiple occasions since the start of the war, notably on April 14 of this year.

The situation around the ZNPP

The Zaporizhzhia NPP has been under occupation by Russian troops since March 2022. During this time, Russia has repeatedly attempted to grant its control over the facility a pseudo-legal status, disregarding the norms of international law.

As part of diplomatic efforts, the United States has proposed a joint management arrangement for the Zaporizhzhia NPP involving Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that such an approach is unfair and unacceptable.

Moscow insists that the electricity generated by the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant be shared between Ukraine and Russia.
