Lukashenko is preparing the army for war: a “selective mobilization” has been announced

Following the completion of a large-scale inspection of its armed forces, Belarus will continue to selectively mobilize military units to test their combat readiness. This was stated by the self-proclaimed president of the republic, Alexander Lukashenko. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Belarusian media.

“Next, as I promised, we will selectively mobilize units to prepare them for war. God willing, we will be able to avoid it,” Lukashenko said during a meeting with Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin. His remarks were reported by the BelTA news agency.

During a briefing on the army’s readiness, Lukashenko demanded that shortcomings be addressed.

“I very much hope that this process will not end, that the army leadership, and first and foremost the minister, will pay the utmost attention to the shortcomings that have come to light following this inspection,” the head of state emphasized.

In late March, Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin stated that Belarus is expanding the scope of its inspections amid growing external threats. According to him, the comprehensive inspection of combat and mobilization readiness, which began on March 11, became one of the largest in the history of the army. As part of it, about 5,000 conscripts were called up from the reserves.

In April, at a meeting to review the results of this inspection, Lukashenko stated: “We are preparing for war… We do not want war, but that is what the army is for. If anyone decides to talk to us and look at us through the sights of a weapon, we will respond. That is what we are preparing for.” He also said that in the event of war, Belarus could increase its troop strength to half a million people.

Last March, Lukashenko signed a decree “On the Transition of State Bodies and Other Organizations to Wartime Operations.” The decree coordinates the work of state bodies during wartime and identifies a number of organizations whose leaders may be granted military ranks if necessary.

“The issuance of the decree will ensure the systematic and uninterrupted functioning of the state apparatus during a period of escalating military threat and in wartime,” Lukashenko’s press service said at the time.

A month earlier, Lukashenko had called on citizens to prepare for World War III “both mentally and strategically.” Lukashenko noted the trend toward NATO expansion and the threat from the “collective West,” adding that Belarus is “at the epicenter of the greatest military-political crisis.”
