Moscow May Escalate the Situation: Polish Intelligence Fears a Russian Attack on NATO’s Eastern Flank

Polish officials are observing an increase in provocations by Russia on NATO’s eastern flank. “We are monitoring the situation in Ukraine and see that the war is not going well for Russia at the moment. This raises concerns that Moscow may resort to further escalation,” said Colonel Paweł Shota, head of the Polish Intelligence Agency, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to DW.

A small-scale attack on the Baltic states could take the form of a landing by “little green men,” according to the head of the Polish intelligence service. This term, used to describe the Russian Armed Forces, emerged after the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and refers to Russian servicemen in military uniforms without insignia.

“Moscow is ‘systematically crossing red lines’ in order to test NATO’s reaction,” Shota emphasized. “The cost of such provocations is low,” but the North Atlantic Alliance’s response “is primarily political, which encourages further escalation,” he added.

Polish Foreign Minister: We Are Aware of the Kremlin’s Plans

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski also warned a few days earlier about a possible operation by the Russian army under a foreign flag.

“We must make it clear to (Russian dictator Vladimir— Ed. ) Putin that we are aware of his plans and that we will not fall for them, that this is absolutely unacceptable, and that we will defend every inch of NATO territory,” the Polish foreign minister emphasized in an interview with the American media company CBS.

The Kremlin has repeatedly stated that Russia has no intention of attacking North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries. However, military and intelligence agencies in several NATO countries share Warsaw’s position and differ only on the scale of a possible attack and the timing.
