Another blackout occurred at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

On Tuesday, August 4, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant once again lost its external power supply. As a result, the plant operated for about an hour on diesel generators, which serve as a backup power source to ensure nuclear and radiation safety. This was reported by [Komersant], citing NAEK “Energoatom.”
“At 2:20 p.m., power supply to the Zaporizhzhia NPP was restored.
A similar situation occurred just a few days ago—on August 1,” the statement reads.
This is the 12th blackout at the Zaporizhzhia NPP since the beginning of 2026 and the 24th since the start of the Russian occupation of the plant. In other words, half of all blackouts at the Zaporizhzhia NPP during the occupation have occurred in 2026 alone.
“Every loss of external power poses a direct threat to nuclear and radiation safety. The dependence of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant on diesel generators is unacceptable and is yet another indication of the critical risks caused by the illegal occupation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP,” Energoatom concluded.
Returning the ZNPP to the full control of Ukraine and its legitimate operator—JSC “NAEK ‘Energoatom’”—can ensure the safe operation of the plant.
