Five frontline regions of Ukraine and Chernihiv are partially without power due to shelling

17 August 13:24

As of the morning of August 17, the situation in Ukraine’s power grid remains challenging. As a result of systematic enemy shelling and active hostilities, damage to critical infrastructure has been reported, leading to localized power outages in several regions of the country. This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Where emergency crews are working around the clock

“The situation is most critical in the Kherson region. Due to damage to power facilities caused by enemy attacks, the largest number of consumers are without power here,” the statement reads.

Partial emergency power outages caused by shelling of energy facilities and combat operations have also been recorded in frontline and border areas of the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions.

This morning in Chernihiv, more than 10,000 customers were left without power due to shelling.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the enemy struck the southern part of the city. A fire broke out at the site,” according to a statement from the Chernihiv City Council.

Repair crews and emergency power services are working around the clock. Restoration work will begin immediately as soon as the security situation allows.

Will hourly power outage schedules be implemented?

Ukrenergo reports that as of 9:30 a.m. on August 17, electricity consumption was 6% higher than at the same time on the previous workday—Friday, August 14. The reason for the increase in consumption is higher air temperatures in most regions of Ukraine compared to the end of last week.

However, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine currently notes that no restrictions are expected today.

You can monitor real-time changes in the grids and emergency work schedules on the official websites of your distribution system operators.

Tips for Consumers: How to Support the Power Grid Throughout the Day

Experts are urging Ukrainians to be mindful of their use of high-power electrical appliances to avoid overloading the grid and causing additional emergencies.

Ukrenergo recommends shifting peak loads to daytime hours.

“Today, it’s best to shift active energy consumption to the period when industrial solar power plants operate most efficiently—from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please limit the use of high-power electrical appliances during the evening hours of peak load on the power grid—from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.,” the statement reads.

During this time, it is recommended to turn off unnecessary lighting and avoid running multiple high-power appliances simultaneously (washing machines, water heaters, air conditioners, electric stoves).
