A St. Petersburg oil terminal caught fire after being struck by drones: what are the consequences?
4 July 12:14
On the night of July 4, Ukrainian drones launched a massive attack on St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region of the Russian Federation. As a result of the raid, the “St. Petersburg Oil Terminal,” one of the largest in northwestern Russia (with a throughput capacity of 12.5 million metric tons per year), caught fire. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Russian propaganda media.
According to media reports, the attack was carried out by FP-1 drones. Located on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland in the Kirovsky District of the city, the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal had 21 storage tanks for petroleum products prior to the attack. Some of them caught fire.
St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov confirmed the information about a “large-scale drone attack” and the “activation” of air defense systems this morning, and urged residents not to go outside “until the drone threat has been eliminated.” He warned of a mobile internet outage. According to Downdetector data, the city’s network was shut down at 4:00 a.m.

Alexander Drozdenco, head of the Leningrad Region, stated that 67 Ukrainian UAVs were “intercepted” overnight. Also, according to him, “debris” from the drones fell “near the port of Vysotsk”—one of Russia’s key ports in the eastern part of the Baltic Sea. The St. Petersburg oil terminal, which has strategic status, was previously attacked on the night of June 3.
As a result of that airstrike, which took place on the opening day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a major fire broke out at the terminal. Beglov reported at the time that there were casualties from the strike but did not provide specific figures. Following another attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on June 6, he also urged people to stay home.
On July 4, in addition to the Kirovsky District of St. Petersburg, authorities declared a state of alert in the Kronstadt, Petrodvorets, and Kurortny districts as well.
In total, on Friday night, according to a report from the Russian Ministry of Defense, 389 Ukrainian aircraft-type drones were intercepted in 19 regions, as well as over the waters of the Azov and Black Seas.
