The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy has called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to respond immediately to Russia’s strike on the Central Spent Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF) located in the Chernobyl zone; an IAEA team will visit the facility in the near future to assess the consequences. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" citing the Ministry of Energy.
“The strike on a spent nuclear fuel management facility poses an unprecedented threat to nuclear and radiation safety. Such actions create risks of damage to critically important systems on which the safe storage of nuclear materials depends, and constitute a gross violation of international law, the principles of nuclear safety, and the fundamental principles of the IAEA,” the statement reads.
The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine has called on the International Atomic Energy Agency to respond immediately to this latest act of Russian nuclear terrorism, to dispatch a mission to document the consequences of the attack, and to provide an international assessment of Russia’s actions.
According to the IAEA, Ukraine informed the agency of a drone attack that occurred early this morning on the central spent nuclear fuel storage facility located in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
“An IAEA team will visit the site in the near future to assess the consequences,” the IAEA post states.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi noted that this incident is deeply concerning, as it occurred at a facility where large quantities of nuclear materials are stored in a repository just a few meters from the building that was struck.
“Attacks on nuclear facilities are absolutely unacceptable and directly contradict the key principles of nuclear safety, in particular the seven indispensable principles of nuclear safety and physical protection during armed conflict,” Grossi stated.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stated that Russia deliberately targeted this specific nuclear infrastructure facility. As of now, there is no exceedance of background radiation levels.
