Belarus’s basket of goods costs almost as much as Poland’s: what’s behind this — an economist

Just a few years ago, food prices in Poland were 30% higher than in Belarus. Today, the difference is only 8%. This is evidence of the rapid decline of the Belarusian economy.

Economist Andrei Novak discussed this on the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to him, the narrowing of the price gap with Poland is due to a sharp increase in the cost of production of Belarusian goods—caused by sanctions and the loss of foreign markets.

“Now, food products in Poland are actually no more expensive than in Belarus. The difference is small,” Novak noted.

The economist also debunked the myth of “quality according to Soviet standards,” which is often used by proponents of Belarusian products. According to him, many old Soviet standards have long failed to meet modern quality requirements in Europe.

“Where economic growth was expected, it has long since disappeared,” he concluded.
