Starmer May Take Over as NATO Secretary General After Resigning — Media Reports

28 June 19:18

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who announced his resignation on June 22, 2026, may run for the position of NATO Secretary General when it becomes vacant in 2028, according to The Observer, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

The Observer also notes that Starmer’s supporters have already gone to great lengths to demonstrate his standing at the G7 summit in June. The publication also describes Starmer’s relationship with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as “so close that they sometimes accidentally call each other” (referring to a so-called “pocket dial,” when a phone dials a number that frequently appears in the call history).

The current NATO Secretary General is former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, whose term is set to end in 2028.

Starmer’s Resignation: What We Know

As a reminder, on June 22, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation as head of government and leader of the Labour Party.

He made this decision following a conversation with King Charles III and an ultimatum from his parliamentary caucus due to the party’s falling approval ratings. This change in the head of the British Cabinet marks the sixth such change in the last 10 years. Andy Burnham, a former health secretary and ex-mayor of Greater Manchester, is set to become the new head of the United Kingdom’s government.
