Mortality rates have risen sharply in France amid the heat wave

Following the onset of a heat wave in Western Europe, mortality rates in France exceeded projected figures by 1,000 cases. This was reported by the French public health agency Santé publique France on Sunday, June 28, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing DW.
“Santé publique France reports an increase in daily mortality rates observed since June 23, 2026, based on preliminary (unaggregated) mortality data,” the agency said in a statement. “A more pronounced increase in the number of recorded deaths was observed in regions under a ‘red’ alert level.”
According to these figures, more than 1,200 deaths (from all causes) were recorded in the country on June 24. On June 25 and 26, there were more than 1,400 deaths, although the data for June 26 has not yet been finalized. For comparison, the agency cites daily mortality figures for April and May: between 900 and 1,000 deaths in each of those months.
“Thus, since June 24, approximately 1,000 more deaths have been recorded (preliminary data) compared to the figures for previous months,” Santé publique France states.
As noted in the report, over the past few days, the increase in daily death rates has been more pronounced in regions under a “red” alert level, namely: Île-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Brittany, the Centre-Val de Loire region, Normandy, and Pays de la Loire.
