Ukraine to increase capacity for gas imports from Poland: what we know

5 May 18:55

The National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Public Utilities (NEURC) has approved a proposal by LLC “Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine” to increase the capacity of the gas transmission system at the entry point of the interconnection with Poland.

This is stated in a NEURC press release, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

“This involves expanding the capacity to import natural gas from EU countries, which is an important step toward strengthening Ukraine’s energy security,” the NEURC statement reads.

It is reported that this decision will contribute to enhancing the country’s energy security and strengthening ties with European partners.

Allocation of New Capacity

The allocation of new (increased) capacity will be carried out in accordance with the specified offer levels:

  • Level I: Effective from the 2030/2031 gas year through 2044/2045. New capacity is projected at 8.73 million cubic meters per day, of which the new capacity to be offered is 6.98 million cubic meters per day.
  • Level II: Designed for the period from the 2032/2033 to 2046/2047 gas years. New capacity is projected at 12.74 million cubic meters per day, of which the new capacity to be offered is 10.2 million cubic meters per day.

If, based on the results of the joint annual auction to be held on July 6, sufficient demand is generated and the economic test yields a positive result, the TSO operators of Ukraine and Poland will implement the necessary measures to increase capacity.

The NEURC noted that the Polish energy regulator has also approved the project for increased capacity.

As reported, in July 2025, LLC “Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine” agreed with the Polish gas transmission system operator Gaz-System to extend the increased guaranteed capacity at the entry point into Ukraine—12.4 million cubic meters—until September 2026. The guaranteed capacity at the entry point into Ukraine from the Polish gas transmission system has been in effect since January 1, 2025.
