An earthquake struck Ukraine: in which region was the epicentre

An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.1 was recorded in the Chernivtsi region on Wednesday evening, 23 October. This was reported by the Main Centre for Special Control, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

It is noted that the tremors were recorded at 18:08, at a depth of 3 km. The source of the earthquake is located near the village of Lomachintsy, Dniester district, Chernivtsi region.

Social media reports that tremors were also felt in the south of Vinnytsia region.

“According to the classification of earthquakes, it is a significant one. An earthquake is felt by a few people who are indoors; in the open air – only in favourable conditions. The vibrations are similar to the shaking caused by a light truck. Attentive observers notice light vibrations of light objects, a little stronger on the upper floors,” the Main Special Control Centre explained.

The last earthquake in the area was recorded on 23 November 2023. Its magnitude was 2.0.

It is worth noting that earthquakes are quite rare in Ukraine. In particular, on 16 September 2024, residents of Odesa also felt an earthquake. It occurred in Romania and had a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale.
