Blueberry prices are falling in Ukraine: what’s behind the trend

11 July 10:12

Blueberry prices in Ukraine have begun to fall sharply, according to analysts at the EastFruit project, as reported by [Komersant].

At the same time, key market players note that the drop in blueberry prices during this period is not a new phenomenon: as a rule, this is precisely when active harvesting of the berries begins, accompanied by an increase in market supply.

According to the project’s daily monitoring data, blueberries from Ukrainian farms have fallen in price by an average of 17% since the end of last workweek. Today, growers are selling most of their blueberries at 300–400 UAH/kg ($6.75–8.99/kg), whereas just a week earlier, they were not willing to ship blueberries for less than 380 UAH/kg ($8.54/kg).

According to producers, the price decline in this segment is driven by several factors. Specifically, market supply has increased compared to last week, as most farmers have begun mass harvesting. In addition, the presence of significant volumes of relatively inexpensive seasonal fruits and berries on the market is putting downward pressure on prices.

It should be noted that blueberries in Ukraine today are still, on average, 37% more expensive than during the same period last year. Key market players attribute this price difference to lower blueberry yields on Ukrainian farms due to abnormal weather conditions during the ripening period.
