Viber blocks scammers: number of spam calls decreased 5 times

The number of calls from intruders and spammers in the Viber app has decreased by 80%. This statistics for January-October 2024 compared to the same period last year was released by the Rakuten Viber team. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Detector-media.
According to the company, this year about 90 thousand citizens of Ukraine became the object of calls from spammers or scammers. This is 80% less than in 10 months of 2023.
In 2024, the number of users who reported spam or fraud via Viber dropped to 4 thousand, which is 16 times less compared to 2023, when more than 59 thousand Ukrainians filed complaints.
Rakuten Viber also blocked 2.5 thousand fraudulent accounts, which is 15 times less than in 2023, when more than 37 thousand accounts were blocked.
The company notes that the significant reduction in fraudulent activity was made possible by the introduction of the “Subscriber Identification” feature, which prevents spam attacks.
It can be enabled by Android users by selecting the “Settings”, “Calls and Messages” and “Caller ID” menus.
Apart from this, Rakuten Viber also advises the app users to utilize useful tools that help to effectively counter fraud and improve user security:
- Messages from unknown contacts: it is more convenient to manage requests from unknown contacts in a separate folder. This will limit interaction with potential spammers. To enable the feature, go to Settings -> Privacy;
- Automatic spam checking, which can be enabled via Options -> Privacy;
- Restrict adding to groups to phonebook contacts only (menu Options -> Privacy).
