“Belarus is no longer a separate state, but part of Russia,” says an economist

Belarus has not been making its own economic decisions for a long time. Oil, gas, and export markets—all of these are controlled by Moscow. Therefore, when Russia’s economy slumps, Belarus goes down with it. Automatically and with no other options.

Economist Andrei Novak made this statement on the "Komersant Ukrainian" YouTube channel .

According to him, after losing the Ukrainian and European markets due to sanctions, Belarus found itself completely dependent on a single partner. Indeed, Belarus’s oil and gas system is owned by Russian companies. The main market for Belarusian goods is Russia. Access to raw materials for processing is also controlled by Moscow.

“Apart from Russia, Belarus is of no interest to anyone. Neither in terms of supply nor in terms of sales,” the economist noted.

Novak emphasized that even Belarusian tractors and refrigerators, which the country had been actively exporting to various countries until recently, are now sold exclusively on the Russian market.

“The Belarusian economy is not a satellite, neither economically nor politically. Belarus is simply a part of Russia that, for some reason, is still formally considered an independent state,” he concluded.
