Ukraine’s population has fallen to 27 million people, according to a demographer

Approximately 27 million people currently live in territory controlled by Ukraine. This estimate was provided by Oleksandr Gladun, deputy director of the Institute of Demography, in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to him, after the start of the full-scale invasion, the State Statistics Service restricted access to most statistical data, particularly demographic data. As a result, there is currently no official information on the population size.

“Today, researchers are working with open data from the Ministry of Justice and the State Border Guard Service, as well as with information provided by international organizations,” says Gladun.

He explained that the Ministry of Justice publishes information every six months on the number of births and registered deaths. These figures, combined with migration statistics, make it possible to estimate the actual population size.

“Based on my own estimates, there are between 27 and 28 million people living in Ukraine,” Gladun noted.

At the same time, he emphasized that no one currently has reliable information on the number of people remaining in the temporarily occupied territories.

According to the demographer, only a new census will be able to provide a comprehensive answer to the question of Ukraine’s population size. The last census was conducted back in 2001.
