For the first time since the war began in Iran: Witkoff and Umerov are set to hold talks in the U.S.
7 May 09:38
U.S. Special Envoy Stephen Witkoff is set to meet in Miami in the coming days with Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), according to the dpa news agency, citing sources in the White House, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to media reports, Umerov will be unable to attend a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada’s temporary investigative commission on the “Midas” corruption case due to a business trip abroad. This is most likely related to negotiations in the U.S.

As of May 2026, peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, despite the mediation efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, have effectively reached an impasse. Key disagreements regarding the status of territories annexed by Russia and security guarantees for Ukraine remain unresolved.

The bilateral talks in Miami will mark the first meeting between representatives from Washington and Kyiv since the White House’s efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine were suspended due to the launch of military operations against Iran.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Bloomberg in an interview that Stephen Witkoff and U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, had been invited to Kyiv for talks that ultimately did not take place.
Ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia
As a reminder, last week the Russian Ministry of Defense announced an order by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin for a ceasefire with Ukraine on May 8–9 in honor of “Victory Day.”
It is worth noting that Moscow took this step without consulting Kyiv. Separately, Russia threatened that if the celebrations were disrupted by attacks, a “massive missile strike” would be launched against the center of the Ukrainian capital.
In response to this initiative, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is declaring a ceasefire with Russia starting at 12:00 a.m. on May 6. According to him, the Ukrainian military will respond in kind in the event of provocations by Russia.
However, during the night and early morning of May 6, the Russians attacked several Ukrainian cities, thereby violating the “ceasefire.” Hostilities on the front lines also continued.
