“The coal industry has no future, and miners need new jobs,” says an economist

The coal industry in Ukraine has no future—and it’s not just about the economy. Coal as an energy source is already being replaced by new technologies today, and tomorrow it will become completely uncompetitive. But people need to be given an alternative. Large-scale construction could be one solution.

Economist Andriy Novak discussed this on the "Komersant Ukrainian" YouTube channel .

“One option is to bring miners out of the mines and give them jobs, for example, in construction. But to do this, we need to organize large-scale national-level construction projects,” Novak explained.

He also drew a parallel with Margaret Thatcher’s reforms in the UK, which shut down the coal industry back in the 1970s—and this became one of the key steps toward the country’s economic growth. According to the economist, Ukraine is following the same path—and the war has only accelerated this process.

“After all, the coal industry has no prospects and can no longer have any. This is already clear to everyone,” the economist concluded.
