A scandal surrounding the packaging design of the popular “Lakomka” ice cream from the “Lasunka” brand is gaining momentum on Ukrainian social media, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The manufacturer is accused of using elements of Russian folk art on the product’s label.

The debate was sparked by professional artist Natalia Zueva, who defended her master’s thesis on Petrykivka painting.

According to her, the design the brand presents on the packaging has nothing to do with authentic Ukrainian “Petrykivka.”

“The brand is using not Petrykivka, but Russian Gorodets painting, having merely changed the colors,” notes the artist, who once studied primary sources in detail at museums and underwent practical training directly at the craft center in the village of Petrykivka in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

The artist believes that despite the altered color scheme, the compositional elements, characteristic brushstrokes, and ornamental style on the label clearly copy the Gorodets style, which originated in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

Opinions in the comments are divided. For some, it is important not to buy products with Russian symbols, while others are convinced that this does not affect the taste.

The company “Lasunka” has not yet provided any official comments regarding the reaction on social media or, more generally, the origin of the ornament on the “Lakomka” label.
