The EU offered Transnistria 60 million euros, but Russia banned it from accepting the funds

Unrecognized Transnistria has refused the 60 million euros of financial support offered by the European Union to help the region cope with the energy crisis. This was announced by Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing NewsMaker.

Recean said that the reason for this decision was pressure from Russia, which seeks to maintain control over the region. The official reason for the refusal was the unwillingness of the Transnistrian authorities to gradually raise tariffs for the population.

According to Rechan, the main condition for receiving European money was a gradual increase in consumer tariffs in Transnistria.

“Tiraspol refused. Russia does not allow them to accept European aid for fear of losing control over the region. The main condition that Tiraspol refused is a gradual increase in consumer tariffs. As a result, they will not be able to receive European aid. This means that the residents of Transnistria will continue to live in a state of unpredictability and worry about gas supplies,” the prime minister emphasized.

How will Chisinau secure gas for the region?

Despite Tiraspol’s refusal of EU assistance, Chisinau has no plans to leave the region without energy resources.

Recean said that the Hungarian company MET Gas and Energy Marketing AG will supply gas to the Left Bank. The financing will be provided by Dubai-based JNX General Trading.

“Both companies have been audited and will supply to the Moldovan border in accordance with the contract with Moldovagaz,” the prime minister added.

Chisinau’s conditions for Tiraspol

Moldova will allow gas transit, but requires a number of steps from Tiraspol to demonstrate openness. Among the main conditions:

  • Release of political prisoners in Transnistria.
  • Solving the problem of the school in Ribnita, which is under pressure from local authorities.
  • Preservation of the Moldovan TV channel Moldova 1 in the region’s broadcasting network.
  • Dismantling the checkpoints established by Tiraspol in 2022.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Moldova will continue to make rational and responsible decisions aimed at maintaining stability throughout the country.

“This is not an agreement between the Moldovan government and Russia. This is a decision that will help people on the Left Bank not to freeze,” Recean summarized.

It should be noted that the energy crisis in Transnistria began on January 1, after Ukraine cut off the transit of Russian gas through its territory. The unrecognized republic turned out to be critically dependent on Russian gas and unprepared for such a step by Ukraine. The territory immediately stopped supplying heat to homes and started selling firewood.
